Looks like a new Microsoft optional update solved the problem. I'm also using Vista Ultimate with the MS 6000 KB/Mouse combo with a V3.x receiver. I couldn't locate a KB article, but the update is called 'Microsoft - Other Hardware - HID Non-User Input Data Filter'.
