Calling all Mobile 5 Users!

My husband and I have recently been discussing about whether to get another phone for him.  Currently he is using a Cingular 2125, while I have the Cingular 8125.  We've waited so long to get the 8525 that with WM6 due now, we're debating about the upgrade.  So that leads the question to you all.  Who is waiting for the upgrade?  Will you just be getting a new phone?  Will you be leaving Windows Mobile devices all together?  Please discuss in the comments section.

I am waiting for a decent WM6 device to come out, I am going to stick with WM because it syncs so easy with windows and outlook, with Windows Live and WM6, this should improve my usability of my device with instant messaging. However my device isn't due a upgrade until April/May so depending on devices that are currently out at the time I may even move away from WM6

I bought the Sprint version of the Motorola MOTO Q as soon as it came out...if Sprint doesn't upgrade to WM6, I will be a little annoyed, but keep in mind that it is an evolutionary update rather than anything revolutionary.  Photon (the next version of Windows Mobile) is supposed to be a much more significant upgrade.  So, if you can live with a little instability and live without some of the latest Windows Live integration features and Office document editing and 2007 file format support, go ahead and buy the WM5 phone.  I have only had my Q about a month and I already can't imagine living without it.  Note that there are a lot of relatively inexpensive Exchange hosting companies that will set up accounts for individuals and support Direct Push, if you want to take advantage of that feature.  Supposedly, WM6 will support push from Hotmail.  Good luck with your purchase decision.

I bought an 8525 a month ago and flat out love it. I have seen a video showing WM6 running on an 8525, but not from Cingular Wireless (my carrier). Whether they provide an upgrade remains to be seen, but it will run it. As an old hacker, I wouldn't mind losing any Cingular-specific stuff if I could load a WM6 ROM onto it and it still worked. Thank goodness for Hard-reset and Sprite Backup <g>! I should be able to get 'back to Kansas' if I hose it. We shall see. I'm not sure you're going to see WM6 before Easter, so if you can wait that long, so be it. The only thing missing on my 8525 is a built-in GPS. That would be very sweet.

  • Wait until you have confirmation, 100% guaranteed, that a phone will have a free or cheap upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.  Then, just before Mobile 6 phones start appearing in stores, there should be a huge price drop to clear out the inventory, and you should pounce on the WinMobile phone.  Don't settle for Windows Mobile 5, but you don't need to pay a premium to have Mobile 6 pre-installed.

I just grabbed a BlackJack last month.  That thing is super-fast compared to my old iPaq.  No word on a WM6 upgrade yet though...

I'd be surprised if the i730 (which I have as well) ever sees a WM6 upgrade.  The device is obsolete.

I'm trying to hold out for WM6 devices, or a commitment to an WM6 upgrade for a specific device, before I get a new phone.  I'd love to move to a GSM phone, but get no GSM coverage at my house.  So I'm stuck with Verizon or Sprint and their more limited phone options.  My big problem now is that the extended battery for my i730 has died and given only 2-3 months before I dump the phone it would be crazy to invest in a new battery.  So I limp by on the standard battery hoping that WM6 devices do really appear in April.

I'm waiting to see what devices have WM6 before I make a purchase.  I don't need a QWERTY phone, a simple candy bar or well designed flip phone will suit my needs.  WM6 looks nice, but I only use my Windows Mobile based phone for personal usage and no email.

I love the 8125. I've hacked it so I'm running WM6 now. I didn't need the 8525, since I don't have a reason for a 3G network. Visit us at forums.xda-developers.com, there's a whole group of users running custom ROMs.

  • I would wait for any official announcements from the carriers if WM6 will be supported on a device. Some official announcements at 3GSM were that the T-Mobile Dash and Palm 750 (Cingular) were going to receive WM6 updates. Also the 8525 doesn't even have PTT fully enabled on the 8525 yet, which is slated to be available in 2007.

As for other devices no official announcements have been made and most probably won't be seen in the US until the second half of the year. There may be more announcements made at MEDC 2007 and CTIA as well. So it would be best to wait and see. As with all phones you are better off waiting as long as you can. If you can't then purchase a device that meets your needs now and hopefully into the future.

Also if you do have any Windows Mobile Devices be sure to apply the W2K7 update to your PC as well as your WM device. :)

Hi hchua I completely agree with you and also REALLY want Windows Mobile 6 on the Samsung i730. I don't know what Harold is talking about since the new devices aren't much different or even better than the i730. It still has better specs than say the i760 has, AND it has a great ONE HANDED verticle Qwerty keyboard. I hope they release it soon OR someone hacks it so we can install it on to the i730.

I have a 8525 on Cingular and it is more of a toy than a real phone or PDA.

It is Soo... slow compared to my (over 3 year old Axim), takes nearly 5 minutes to start-up, drops calls regularly, and needs a good reboot at least twice a day.  On top of that about 1/3 of the sites I want to visit do not load correctly on it and AIM and Yahoo messenger are not build in to it unless you download an out-date 8125 AIM app from Cingular in England or pay at least $40 for a third party app.  Active sync is also a half hearted attempt for synchronizing – I could go on for hours about the problems it has caused.  Ten years ago I had much better results synching data with Intellisync.

Hopefully WM6 will take care of some of the problems - if not I am going to dump the phone and try an iPhone or go back to Nokia ( I had great results with a 6800)

When I think about MS I always think of the joke…

What if your car ran on Windows?   I don’t remember the exact answer but it went something like this…  you’d have to reboot at every stop sign, reinstall at every traffic light, upgrade to get onto the highway, and you’d have a 90 day warrantee as long as you didn’t drive the car…

I have an i730 with WM5.  This phone is definately not obsolete.  I still have co-workers that are still impressed with this phone after two years now.  I'm hoping an upgrade to WM6 is released for this phone.  I have no intentions of getting rid of it anytime soon.  Unlike Mark's Cingular this phone never drops calls, boots quickly, sync's without a problem, surfs the web just fine, plays my music easily. It even runs a third party, turn by turn, gps program with a bluetooth reciever quite efficently while taking calls.

I couldn't agree with Rodney and Ed more. I'm considering calling someone to get them to make us WM6 for the i730. I have no idea who to talk to as I would assume they would make those people out of reach to the consumer..their own people don't know when the i760 is even coming out and have to look on websites to get an idea. I don't want that phone, since they're not making the SCH i760 with the form factor of the SGH i760 and i730 with a vertical keyboard I don't want it. Seems like there;s a lot of people with this phone (the i730) who would want WM6 as an upgrade as many don't see a real upgrade around the corner. Seeing how others are making cooked versions of WM6 and or getting SDHC working for their older devices is so frustrating. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this going? I have some myself but would like to hear from anyone else. Shoot me an email at my name with an underscore7777 with no spaces at yahoo if you have any ideas.

I love my i730 WITH my SDHC support up to 5GBs of my 8GB SD Card, but if I was to get a new phone I think it would DEFINITELY have to be the SGH-i760! Yes I would switch from Verizon to AT+T for it too! I can't seem to find anyone but popularelect.com that is looking to stock it. They said they had some pieces but had to send them back because they came flashed in French, and they didn't want to deal with explaining to people they would void their warranty if they reflashed it to english..Man..Anyone hear any updated news on the SGH-i760 with the sweet one handed vertical keyboard and HSDPA (3G) (ie NOT the ugly SCH-i760 with the side ways horizontal keyboard) as to when/where we can get it in english?
